  • Re-elected McGowan Government to contribute $1.5m for four new indoor sport courts in Geraldton
  • Grassroots project to provide for growing local participation in basketball and netball
  • WA Labor Candidate for Geraldton Lara Dalton launched petition last year in support of expansion

Geraldton’s Activewest Stadium will be expanded with four new indoor sport courts under a re-elected McGowan Government, with the Premier today announcing a $1.5 million commitment to upgrade the grassroots sporting facility.

The announcement follows strong advocacy from the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association and WA Labor Candidate for Geraldton Lara Dalton.

The Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association has campaigned strongly in recent times for the upgrades to meet growing local demand for court space, with existing facilities well over capacity.

WA Labor candidate for Geraldton Lara Dalton threw her support behind the project last year, calling it an investment for the community and launching a petition for the upgrades to be funded.

If re-elected, the McGowan Government will contribute $1.5m towards the project – building four new multi-use indoor courts at the rear of the existing Activewest Stadium, catering for both basketball and netball.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Geraldton, with the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association boasting around 2,000 members and 200 teams.

With about 20 per cent of the Association’s members from Aboriginal backgrounds, the project will have the added benefit of delivering important community and health outcomes for some vulnerable community members.

The project’s final scope will be determined following confirmation of total available funding from additional sources, including the Association, the City of Greater Geraldton and others.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

“The Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association and WA Labor candidate for Geraldton Lara Dalton have made a brilliant case for this expansion.

“The project will deliver considerable benefits for the people of Geraldton, in line with mine and WA Labor’s commitment to fostering stronger, healthier and more connected communities with the help of grassroots sport.”

Comments attributed to WA Labor Candidate for Geraldton Lara Dalton:

“I am so pleased Mark McGowan and WA Labor have listened to our community’s calls for this much-needed expansion.

“I launched my petition on behalf of the community and the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association last year to make the case – and it is wonderful to know these new courts will be built under a re-elected McGowan Government.”
